“I’m mad as hall and I’m not gonna take it anymore”

Released in 1976, winning critical acclaim and four oscars, Network is one of those rare movies that has the uncanny ability to predict the future. The movie revolves around a fictional American television network, desperate to boost it’s ratings. The main character is the news anchor turned prophet Howard Beale. After hearing of his immanent dismissal, Beale publicly announces he is going to kill himself on television. However, his mental collapse makes him useful again for the television network, who decide to build a show around the raving prophet, that turns into a major succes. The movie brilliantly depicts the turn to infotainment in the media industry, and dishes out a radical and sweeping critique to modern television culture. The movie can easily be called visionary, the way it prefigures the rise of emotional television, with television evangelicals, networks like Fox News, and reality tv like Big Brother. All that, combined with a crazy script and impressive acting, makes it into first quality radical entertainment.
